Looking For a Job? Networking May Be the Answer for You

By Carla Vaughan Of the dozen or so ways to find a job, which ones do you think are the most successful? Would you be surprised to learn that the ways most people use to find their jobs are actually the least effective? The reason is because they are relying on the old standards: classified ads, job fairs and mailing resumes to employers. While those methods typically result in 5-7% of job candidates finding work, for the rest of the population, something else is going to be required. In order to find a good job, you have to put forth effort. One of the most efficient ways to find meaningful work is to network with people you know (friends, family, neighbors and former co-workers). Networking involves sustaining positive relationships with a variety of people. It takes time and effort, but often pays off when employment situations arise. Sometimes, you have to go outside your sphere of influence and meet other people in order to find the job you are looking for. To meet other people, you have to make an effort to get to know other people in your chosen industry/field. Networking groups are common in many cities and offer a variety of resources and opportunities to meet others. Book clubs are also excellent for meeting people who enjoy reading the same type of material as you do. The point is that you have to network. Get out and meet people. Get to know them. Listen to them. Find out what their needs are and help them. When the time comes for you to find a job or if something comes up with someone you know you will be far more likely to get a phone call for an interview than others in your field. When you listen to others and help them achieve their goals, you are more likely to find yourself being helped into achieving your own goals. It is a two-way street. Ortho Evra Patch: Lucky to be Alive

She had recently been on the Ortho Evra Patch. I called my doctor and told him my symptoms but he didnt think it was that important, said Amanda. Neither Amanda or her doctor equated the warning signs to a blood clot, or the Ortho Evra patch. Although he didnt have an opening, I went to his office anyway and sat in the waiting room. By the time I got there, my entire leg was swollen and purple. The nurse took one look and called the doctor he wasnt in the office and she told me to go to ER right away. Luckily it was adjacent to his office. The nurse thought it was a possible blood clot but until a Doppler was done, like an ultrasound, they couldnt tell for sure. As soon as I got to ER a doctor told me that I had all the symptoms of a blood clot. A technician scanned my leg and sure enough, he found a massive clot. There is a main vein running down your leg and right in the groin area the clot was cutting off the blood supply to my leg, hence the discoloration. Blood thinners were immediately injected into my stomach and by the time I left hospital, one week later, I was covered in bruises from all the injections. The doctor said I was lucky because if the clot had moved further up my vein, I might have died. What a close call! They call blood clots the silent killer because quite often you dont get any symptoms. In my case they started as leg cramps in September but I wasnt hospitalized until November. My doctor told me that it takes from three to five days for a clot to develop, so in the course of several months, it developed and moved up my leg. In September, I got a pain in my calf but I thought it was just a charley horse. My doctor thought I had low potassium so I had blood tests but they came back normal. Then I was referred to an orthopedic surgeon, thinking I might have suffered an injury. Nobody ever thought that it could have been a blood clot until I showed up at my doctors office in November with a purple leg. I feel like I have been robbed of my health and I am so frustrated. I have so many medical bills already, it is ridiculous. Now I have to get blood tests every week and I will be on blood thinners for God knows how long. I am only 25 years old and these are supposed to be the best years of our lives. It is terrible to be ill; I feel so bad for all the women who are suffering from taking Ortho Evra. It isnt right that the drug makers got so greedy and put money before our well-being. It is beyond frustrating that drug manufacturers could do this to millions of women. Bovine Brains � Do They Work The Same As Ours?

By Dan Ohler WHOA GIRLS. DONT BE AFRAID. SHES THE SAME AS YOU! The heifers stampeded across the pasture and right through the fence. There were posts popping, wires whining, bovines bellowing. I had not planned this rodeo. I recently bought three groups of year-old heifers to graze the grass on our small farm, Ohlers Acres. Two groups were Black Angus totally black. When I turned them together, it was if they were long-lost cousins immediate friends, even though they were from different farms. Then I hauled in a heifer from the third farm. This animal was yellowish with a white face. When I let her out of the trailer, the hullabaloo happened. Through my years of working with cattle, I have finally learned that once an episode like this starts, it is out of my control. Rather than cussing, swearing, and raising my blood pressure, I might as well sit, watch the show, and see if I can learn something. It occurred to me that this episode was about the same as watching the integration of a new child at a playground, a newcomer in a community, or a new member of an association or organization. We may feel very comfortable with our own group, our own herd. We may not like everyone, but we know them and know what to expect in our interactions. It is safe inside of our protected little pasture. And then the newcomer arrives. We may attack, run, or hide because we are afraid. Afraid? No way. I aint afraid of nothin or nobody. At a conscious level, we likely deny that we are afraid. At an unconscious level, we are afraid. We dont know or understand the newcomer, so we avoid the person physically, verbally, and socially. Most times we are not consciously aware that we are doing it. I dont believe that most of us intentionally want to be rude or hurtful to others. And yet, out of our fear, out of our lack of understanding, we may do just that to protect ourselves. We may ignore, resist talking, and be just plain un-neighbourly. Ive been the newcomer many times, and Ive also been part of the herd. Each role can be uncomfortable, and it can be exciting with a positive approach and attitude. It takes an incredible amount of courage to be the newcomer and to strive to become one of the herd. There are so many new faces, attitudes, judgments, and perceptions to break through. It also takes courage to break from the herd and to include the newcomer. I have found this move to be very rewarding and have gained many great long-term friends this way. Next time you become aware of a newcomer to your organization or neighbourhood, rise above the bovine brain and give this a-go: - step away from the herd, or your comfort zone, and approach the newcomer with a welcoming smile - introduce yourself - ask questions about his/her life (dreams, desires, passions, family, etc.) - listen intently with a genuine desire to learn about him/her - refrain from talking about yourself, unless they ask and then only briefly - offer to introduce him/her to others in the group. As humans, we like to feel valued, respected, and included. We like to be a part of the herd. Consciously using these tips feels good for both parties, and may inspire newcomers to become involved and committed to growing healthy organizations and communities. We may have different skin, hair, spiritual and sexual preferences. But at the core, our hearts work the same wonderful way. Now excuse me. Your Own Self-Worth

By Amy Hale How comfortable are you with your self-worth? Self-worth is important to the ultimate happiness you feel in your life because it is deeply tied into your ability to attain your desires. In order to move forward with your desires, you need perseverance. So why do we sometimes give up so easily? Many of us feel that there are not enough hours in the day to pursue our dreams or we live in an environment that seems so far away from what we truly want. Are these just excuses? Who or what do we hide behind in order to stay in our comfort zone? Being comfortable doesnt mean were happy where we currently are. It could be that we are afraid to step out of our comfort zone because we havent learned to trust ourselves in creating and allowing our desires to come to fruition. This process may seem difficult at first, but it does get easier as you move into a better state of mind. If your feelings and thoughts are positive, they are very powerful. If your feelings and thoughts are negative, they are also very powerful. We can think of this as an extension to the cause/effect theory, where your thoughts and feelings are the cause and the effect is what happens from them. For example, have you ever been unhappy in your job and thought, what if I cant get another job? Or maybe youve experienced a time when you were alone, without a partner. People ask things like, Why cant I find anyone decent? or When will I ever find someone with whom I can share my life? Thoughts like these generate feelings that go directly into your unconscious mind where they create more in the reality of lacking. However, have you noticed when you receive a job offer or find a new partner, often you will receive more job offers and meet more potential partners shortly thereafter? This is because you no longer have the unconscious sense of lack which perpetuates more feelings of lack. This becomes a prevailing cycle unless you begin to change the way you feel about yourself. The unconscious mind is very impressionable and communicates by imagery and feelings. So doesnt it make sense to use your creative mind to generate your desires into realization? You can use conscious and rational thoughts to generate images and feelings within you that attract your desires and help make you comfortable with the changes that need to take place on the way. Here are some ways to become more engaged to your own self-worth. Set time aside each day to daydream about what it is you really want. Be open to how you feel and how your thoughts progress. If anything makes you uncomfortable, focus on that for only a moment and then remove it and begin daydreaming again where you left off. The more comfortable you become with your new desire, the easier it will be to obtain. Here is a technique that I use when Im feeling blocked. Imagine that you are approaching a wall. It can be as big and tall as you like. On this wall is written what it is that is blocking a particular desire. Acknowledge what that block is and decide if you are willing to keep it or let it go. When you decide to let it go, find a way around this wall. Climb over it, go around it, find a way through it. On the other side of the wall is what life will be like once the obstacle is gone. If you are hiding behind a situation or person, imagine what it would be like if they were to step aside and let you have what it is you want. Get comfortable with the idea of making the decision to move forward with your desire and notice what feelings it generates. Common feelings will be fear and nervousness. These are normal. Keep imagining a successful outcome and you will stay motivated to move ahead. Guided imagery allows us to test an experience we desire. It can help us make changes we want more easily. When you become comfortable with your desire, your conscious and unconscious minds work in unison to put it out to the universe so that you receive it faster. As you do these things, you will find how much of your self-worth is tied into your reality. Becoming engaged with your self-worth can help you manifest your desires, bringing prosperity into your reality quicker and easier than you ever thought possible. By committing to stepping out from behind other people or negative circumstances, you can employ new strategies to help you have the life that you desire. Depression and Diet: Lack of Omega 3’s?

By Gabe Mirkin, M.D. In some people depression may be caused by omega-3 deficiency which results from not eating enough nuts, seeds, whole grains, beans or deep-water fish. Many psychiatrists treat depression with drugs that raise brain levels of serotonin. Now we learn that a diet deficient in omega-3 fatty acids may lower brain levels of serotonin and can cause depression. Studies show that depression is associated with low levels of red blood cell membrane and low intake of omega-3 fatty acids, that increased ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids is associated with increased severity of depression. Depression is 60 times more common in New Zealand (6 percent) than in Japan (.12 percent); the difference may be explained by the high intake of omega-3-rich fish by the Japanese. Post-partum depression is common in women after they give birth. Pregnancy uses up huge amounts of omega-3 fatty acids. Women with the lowest blood levels of omega-3s are the ones most likely to suffer post-partum depression. Depression increases a person’s chances of getting a heart attack. Depressed people often have low blood levels of omega-3s, and so do people who are likely to suffer heart attacks. So the association of depression with heart attacks may be explained by both being caused by low omega-3 fatty acid levels. If these studies can be supported by further studies, some cases of depression may be prevented and treated by eating plenty of deep-water fish, nuts, seeds, beans and whole grains.
